Normally I would say no it doesn't matter, but at the age of 12 I would definetely not want my daughter wearing something like a leather looking swimsuit. You are defenitely not overreacting

I would not let my child wear anything that reminded me of stripper and/or hooker garb.

I don't think so. I think if you're worried about your daughter getting obsessed with how she looks, it's probably a good idea to say "no" every now and then, especially if it's something you feel unsure about, like the bathing suit. Trust your instincts.
You didn't say how your daughter reacted, but if she was kind of like oh okay about it I'd say everything was okay.
