Designer bags don't "last longer".
You want it for the status. and trying to make your desire "PRACTICAL" isn't going to fly.
Tell your mother that you want to spend your own money---but be prepared for her to use the purse as a weapon any time you ask for something for the next three years. You will probably hear "Too bad you blew all that money on the purse." And since you probably will want to drive in that time frame, you really might start to hate the bag.
