As a nursing student, was this inappropriate? Will I get in trouble?

Postby bardaric73 » Sat Nov 21, 2009 10:51 am

I am a nursing student, I had a clinical on a Med/Surg floor tonight. My patient was a man in his 50's who had cellulitis from a bee sting. Well I was collecting information for my Care Plan, asked about his history and all, and he mentioned he had a penile implant after impotence from prostate cancer. I asked him how it worked, and he decided to show me. He pumped this air thing and sure enough he got an erection and he deflated it too.

My instructor came in later to watch me give him a shot, and he laughed and said "I don't mind showin you my stomach, after all you saw much more earlier". After we walked out my instructor asked what he meant, I explained and she said, "And what made you think that was appropriate?" And tonight she emailed me saying I need to talk to her tomorrow.

Do you think I will get in trouble? Was it inappropriate?

I'm a 22 y/o attractive female, at the time it didn't seem like he was flirting or had weird intentions now I'm not sure.

Lol, I admire your curiousity, that'll serve you well as a Nurse. It wasn't inappropriate enuf to him that he didn't mind mentioning it mixed company, so I doubt he had bad intentions. I imagine he had nurses after the implant, so it was no big thing to him.

Yes, this was inappropriate. How his penile implant worked had no relation to his cellulitis. This is crossing the line from an ethical standpoint. Ethics demand that you ask no more than is necessary for treatment. Fulfilling your personal curiosity is a violation of ethics. This is a very difficult area for many people. Just remember, always err on the side of caution.

No. You did not have any other intention other than to care for this man, at the time. Perhaps they are trying to look out for you, just
in case someone does try to accuse you of doing something to them.
But I do not think that you are in trouble, don't worry. You will be fine.

Although that was kind of risque for a learning nursing student, I don't think it'll make you lose your education/career over it. I doubt you will get in trouble for what happened, just make sure it doesn't happen again. Hope you are okay!

That's disgusting...Your instructor can't really blame you for it. Explain to her what happened. I bet she'll understand. He was probably flirting with you. I would stay away from pervs like that. That's why I want to work with babies.

i dont think you can get in deep trouble with that. Am sure your teacher is going to let you know it was not a good thing to do.But always remember not to ask any man if you can see their pipi cause one day.........

Sounds like a dirty old man that wanted to show you his "smarter half". Him showing you that was totally inappropriate and you should have been smart enough to see it coming (sorry about the choice of words). What your instructor tells you tomorrow will tell you alot if you listen closely. Make sure you ask questions about anything you don't understand. I would go so far as to get what she says in writing. Fat chance, but you never know about some people. You could also tape the comments, but don't let her find out you did it or she will never trust you again. CYA...
Dont wait till its to late....

i dont think that you will get into any trouble. she just probably wnats to talk to you and let you know not to do it again. it would be differnet if you were an employee at this hospital that knew better, but you are just a student who is learning. i wouldnt worry about it though. what is she going to do; kick you out of nursing school....i dont think so because if she did, that would be dumb on her part. she just want to make sure you understand whats appropiate and inappropriate.
